The Naue II (sometimes called the “Type II”) emerged around 1450 BC and spread from northern Italy across the Mediterranean, achieving particular popularity in the Aegean. Originally forged entirely from bronze, the design endured for more than 700 years and seamlessly bridged the transition into the Iron Age, where later examples adopted iron blades while retaining the distinctive riveted hilt construction. Its long service life and wide distribution made it one of antiquity’s most recognizable war swords.
