Pembridge 14th Century Great Helm - 16 Gauge
Designed after surviving examples from the Hundred Years’ War, the Pembridge Great Helm showcases the evolution from flat-topped helms to stronger, impact-deflecting domes. The eye slits feature raised ridges to resist deformation, while the perforated face provides breathing and hearing relief during the press of battle. Quatrefoil cut-outs at the lower face echo originals that accepted a chain toggle linking the helm to a breastplate—preventing loss when doffed. Inside, a robust, adjustable suspension liner wrapped in durable canvas cushions the head, and a leather chin strap with an antique-finished buckle secures the fit. Crafted from riveted and weld-reinforced 16-gauge mild steel, this helm is tough enough for field wear in living history and stage combat settings.
This model is based on the helm associated with Sir Richard Pembridge, a knight in service to King Edward III. Helms of this pattern were worn by knights and professional men-at-arms at pivotal clashes such as Crécy (1346) and Poitiers (1356). The domed crown improved glancing and energy dissipation over earlier flat-topped styles, marking a key stage in 14th-century armor development.
